Five Ways to Motivate your Team to Harvest Low-Hanging Fruit

Five Ways to Motivate your Team to Harvest Low-Hanging FruitFive Ways to Motivate your Team to Harvest Low-Hanging FruitFive Ways to Motivate your Team to Harvest Low-Hanging Fruit Eden and Terri Long, authors of Low-Hanging Fruit 77 Eye-Opening Ways to Improve Productivity and Profits (Wiley, 2014)The best ideas to improve organizations come from engaging those closest to the work. Good ideas usually do elend just pop into peoples heads (unless they are in the shower, of course) they come as the result of many people throughout the company trying hard to see and solve problems. This may not require a lot of time, but it does require motivation. Creating and sustaining that motivation requires that your team have a personal desire to improve the company.Motivating managers is, by far, the single most important modul to growing earnings. The good news is that it is also the easiest to get right.1)Create an Idea-Based BudgetIf your annual budget process is a few months away, then use t hat as a great motivation to start now.You will be able to start your budget process already knowing that you have a large, new, source of funds. How great will it feel to start a budget process knowing that you have millions of new dollars already identified for the next yearInstead of the normal budgets that have holes (many quite gaping) that need to be filled, you will be starting out with a surplus that you are figuring out how to deploy.Even mora importantly, you will have achieved the holy grail of all CFOs a budget that is as solid as a rock. The key is to create an Idea-Based Budget.2)The Five Surprising Words I want everyone on board.Lately, executives have tended toward a more inclusive management style. Decisions are more often made collectively by a team rather than individually by the person in charge. And not just by a democratic vote. Many leaders now want unanimity.Leaders play more of a coaching role, than the star player role. But some leaders have gone too far. T he five surprising words that stop good executives from being great leaders are I want everyone on board.Decisions are stymied because leaders cede to some member of their team the right to veto. We see it often.Just one member out of 20 might not like the idea but the decision is just as dead as if all 20 of the team hated iteven if the boss likes itWhat they should not do is allow opinions without facts to substitute for their own good judgment. You should not delegate veto power to team members when their objections are just opinions like, I dont feel comfortable with this or I dont think it will work but I cant explain why or I just dont like this approach.3) If You Want the Money, Spend the Time For better or worse, the things that leaders personally engage in become the highest priorities for their teams. There is no substitute for your personal leadership to create focus and energy.Your team will follow your example. Your motivational e-mails, speeches, and memos can amplify your leadership by example, but they cannot ever replace it.When you walk the walk, you will find that you are doing so on a two-way street. In one direction, you are able to motivate managers through inspiration, passion, and expertise. Think coach. In the other direction, and just as important, your teams will teach you about what is really going on in the company, about the depth of your bench and the overlooked talent, about connections between divisions you had not realized, and about your real company culture. What you learn will change how you lead. It is similar to becoming an undercover boss, but without the cameras No PowerPoint presentations, no memos, no e-mails can substitute for learning directly from those closest to the work.4) Executive Motivators that Demotivate Everyone Else Hypocrisy is one of the best tools you have to demotivate your team.We are not against off-site meetings and retreats, but we are against wasting time and money. One executive decided to use hi s retreat as an exercise in motivation and problem solving He set up a contest to get the best ideas about where to hold a retreat that would be more fun, more productive, and less expensive than any past ones. He got many good ideas. One idea that was a huge hit was to replace a long, fancy dinner with dinner at a local dive (think the Food Networks Diners, Drive-ins and Dives) that was unique, had great food, and was very inexpensive. That was truly walking the walk5) The Corporate Imposter SyndromeHow often have you heard a manager say, weve looked into that when given a suggestion. Often times, this is merely a covert dismissal of an idea from someone outside the immediate team. This syndrome is remarkably easy to banish.First, acknowledge this fear frequently and loudly before you ask everyone to find new problems to solve. Second, leaders should make it clear that they believe that the best-performing managers do better than poorly-performing managers at finding more. Why? Great managers are better at motivating their teams, at finding and fixing problems, and at getting decisions made.Third, make sure that you sincerely commend people every time they reveal a new problem to solveExcerpted with permission of the publisher, Wiley, from Low-Hanging Fruit 77 Eye-Opening Ways to Improve Productivity and Profits by Jeremy Eden and Terri Long. 5 Signs That a Company Offers Upward Mobility

5 Signs That a Company Offers Upward Mobility5 Signs That a Company Offers Upward Mobility If youre one of the 94 percent of employees who would stay at a company longer if it invested in their careers, you may be looking for signs of future advancement as you interview for new jobs. This isnt always easy to spot. However, there are a few clear signs that a company encourages upward mobility, according to the employees of AdRoll Group , a company that prioritizes developing (and retaining) their in-house talent. As you interview for your next big gig, take a closer look and ask the right questions, looking for the signs of a company that values upward mobility.Managers need to be your cheerleaders, while also challenging you to step outside of your comfort zone . This was apparent when talking with the AdRoll team about how their managers played crucial roles in their growth.Head of Customer Operations at AdRoll, Emma Gilroy, explains, We are genuinely motivated to develop people and see them grow. Even if I have a really amazing team, Im always looking at what each persons next step is. While I hate to lose them, Im always encouraging them to think beyond their current role.Along with guidance needs to be trust, according to Darragh Fitzpatrick, VP of Sales & Account Management, who said I think the area that was really powerful for me was the level of trust I was given. The thought was they knew me and Id proven that I could do this role, so I got a chance to move into new opportunities.A company that uses their top talent to berater up-and-coming staff shows that they value career development . As Head of Product Strategy at AdRoll, Larissa Licha was fortunate to have a top-level mentor at AdRoll, which made her take a completely different career path than she would have expected.During my first year, Valentino the companys CTO was a really key mentor Having mentorship and the company give me leverage to do things that are not my core com petencies, and motivate me to challenge myself, got me to a role that I never thought I would be exposed to. To find out whether this is an important part of the culture at the company youre considering, ask about mentorship during your interview.Communication is paramount to successful employee development - employees cant understand their strengths and weaknesses without the proper feedback . I have always been encouraged to give feedback and participate in the broader organization, says Licha. There are a lot of ways to learn from people in different departments.Participating in the feedback conversation was how Licha found her voice , which ultimately allowed her to progress in the company. However, she reminds, you cant just offer an opinion. I decided to be noisy about problems but also proactive about coming up with solutions, which gave me visibility. An organization with open communication that encourages feedback will help you understand your core competencies so that you can hone your skills and grow in your role. While leaders must encourage and challenge their team, they must also be accessible to their staff. Exposure to leadership equates to exposure to the big-picture goals of an organization, which helps you understand the company objectives, as well as where you fit and how you can make a difference moving forward.Just as the CTO mentored Licha, the other leaders of AdRoll were present for and inspired their staff. She explains I had exposure to leadership when I started, which gave me an important, broader perspective. If a company is transparent and leaders are intentionally available to staff, this helps in the overall advancement of the entire team. The mindset of growth needs to permeate an entire organization in order to inspire employees like yourself to take on new roles and progress in your career. Emma Gilroy explains AdRolls approach The people programs we have are really important, but I believe internal mobility stems from a genu ine interest in everyones growth and development. The best way I can describe it is we encourage employees to always be learning , and always be developing.John Shin, Lead Business Operations Manager at AdRoll, also says that he approaches everything with a growth mindset. The company rewards people who work really hard and are open to learning. Those attributes are valuable elements for success. Show your ability and desire to work within a growth mindset environment to find a company that will allow you to excel.Growth-focused companies want to attract top talent and develop them into future leaders . If you want to find an organization that celebrates internal mobility and career growth, use these insider tips to find the right match.

Your Guide to Your First Week on the Job - The Muse

Your Guide to Your First Week on the Job - The MuseYour Guide to Your First Week on the Job You walk through the revolving door of the lobby toward the elevator, soaking in your surroundings- theres not a familiar face in the building. You straighten out your suit, press 12, and take a deep breath Once those doors re-open, your first week of work will officially begin.Whether its your first position or your fifth, those first few days on the job can be more than a little intimidating. But with these key rules, you can get comfortable in your new surroundings, get up to speed quickly, and get off on the right foot with your new boss and co-workersDo Be a SpongeOne of your most important duties your first week is absorbing everything. Getting to know your companys culture, the working and communication styles of your teammates, the schwierigkeit projects, bro politics, and department or company-wide goals means that youll be able to start your real work sooner (and be more effective wh en you do).So, go to the new hire orientation, sign up for professional development classes, and attend all the team and office meetings you can, even if youre not yet sure whats going on or they dont 100% pertain to your work. Also join in on the informal events. If you get asked to lunch, happy hour, or the office softball league(either as a participant or onlooker), say yes. Its a great way to meet people, and it shows that youre excited to be part of the team.Dont Overcommit YourselfDo be careful, though, to balance your schedule- you want to have plenty of time to learn the ropes from your desk. The last thing you want is to look like you have too much to juggle, seem overwhelmed, or show up late to a commitment because youre stuck somewhere else.Do Ask QuestionsAs you learn about new processes, projects, and people, dont be afraid to ask questions. You need to get up to speed, and people will expect it from the new part on the team. Also take down detailed notes about everythi ng you learn, even if it seems simple. Your brain is going to be on overload this week, and writing everything down will make sure you dont have to ask the same question twice.Dont Be Afraid to Speak UpAt the same time, dont be afraid to contribute and add value- you do want to reinforce that youre the right person for the job No, you wont know everything (nor should you act like you do), but you can make suggestions in team meetings or brainstorming sessions, or ask questions like, Has this been tried before? And if you have a skill or ability that youve been hired to bring to the team, pipe up and share that knowledge. But be careful to read your audience. You dont want to come on like gangbusters or step on someones toes.Do Offer to HelpThere may be some down time during your first few days on the job as your boss and team adjust to having you there. But dont sit around waiting for others to figure out tasks for you- volunteer to help your new teammates on a project. Youll show i nitiative, youll build rapport with your boss and co-workers, and youll learn about expectations, procedures, and how things are done.Dont Turn Down Help or AdviceIf your boss or co-workers give you advice or offer to help you with a task or project, take them up on it- yes, even if youre totally capable of handling things yourself. Its a great way to bond with your office mates, plus you may get valuable insight into the companys expectations or a more efficient way to do the work youll be given.Do Find a MentorIt never hurts to have an experienced, knowledgeable, successful professional to bounce ideas off of and be groomed by, but its especially useful when youre the newbie. Look around. Who are the stars of the organization- the ones who radiate likability, confidence, and initiative? Introduce yourself, and pick their brains.Dont Rely Only on Your New MentorUndoubtedly, the people who make you feel most comfortable will become your go-tos as you navigate your first week. But re member the time it takes for people to help you out is time being taken away from their own tasks. Be sensitive to this by trying to figure things out for yourself first, asking a variety of people when you do have questions, and showing appreciation for everyone who helps you out.Do Keep Your Boss InformedThroughout the week, ask for periodic meetings with your boss (instead of popping in her office for every question you have). In addition to getting her direction on projects and tasks, you should use this time to update her on what youre learning and who youre meeting with.Ask questions like Are there additional tasks I should be taking on or skills I should be learning? and Can you give me feedback on the project I just completed? to show initiative, but also do a lot of listening, too. Your boss feedback and insight is going to be one of your greatest resources at this point- after all, youre going to be spending the next weeks, months, and maybe even years working for her, and learning how she thinks early on will serve you well.Dont Compare Everything to Your Last JobSurely you could rattle off things you loved (or loathed) about your last job and how this position compares- but dont You want to give yourself every opportunity to shine, and that means keeping your initial first week impressions to yourself. Youre in a new place, and this is a new opportunity, so embrace it and move forward

How to Answer Interview Questions About Anger at Work

How to Answer Interview Questions About Anger at WorkHow to Answer Interview Questions About Anger at WorkWhen interviewers ask, When welches the last time you were angry? What happened? they want to know how you might handle stressful situations at work. The real meaning of the word angry to an interviewer is a loss of control, and its important to know that you can handle difficult situations while remaining professional. In your response, you should share a moment when you felt angry at work, but make sure the experience, and your reaction to it, does notlage reflect poorly upon you. How to Answer As well as asking about the last time you were angry, you may hear the similarinterview question,What makes you angry? Your answer to any question about anger should contain two components. First, describe the particular situation that frustrated you, and then explain how you handled that situation. The situation should be work-related, and not sohonigweinhing that happened in your p ersonal life. Keep your explanation brief and to the point. When describing the situation, avoid heated words like hate or even angry. Instead, use less intense words to describe your anger, like frustrated or disappointed. This will emphasize that you are not one to lose control in a difficult scenario. As you answer, keep your tone even or light - that is, you dont want to seem fired up just recounting the situation. Try to select a situation that does not involve a previous boss or manager, as this will make you appear to be an easily disgruntled employee. Similarly, while it is fine to mention being frustrated by someones unprofessional behavior or a difficult situation, do not spend too much time blaming or attacking someone else in your answer. Its also not to your advantage to mention something that could portray you in a bad light or something so minor and petty. Your interviewer might wonder why it riled you up. Briefly mention the behavior or event that bothered you, and then move on to the solution. Make sure to explain how you handled the situation, with an emphasis on your calm, professional manner in dealing with it. For example, if you were frustrated by an employees behavior, explain how you met with him or her and provided constructive feedback that led to a positive change in their actions. Another option for answering this question is to say that you typically do not get angry at work. This demonstrates both that you do not lose control at work and that you realize that kind of behavior is inappropriate. However, after explaining this, you should still describe a time when you were frustrated or disappointed by something at work, and how you handled it. To deny that you ever become frustrated would make you appear insincere. The STAR approach can be a real asset in formulating your response to these types of questions. Examples of the Best Answers I try to look at every situation from an analytical perspective, and not let my emotions d ictate my actions. I have had employees in the past whose professionalism has been questionable, and who have not met the requirements of the job. In those situations, I have found that the best policy is to be honest about the issues and offer clear strategies for improvement.I dont think anger is an appropriate workplace emotion. I have dealt with situations that I found frustrating for example, I had a coworker who was very confrontational in her written and oral communication. I felt like I was constantly being criticized for things beyond my control. I sat down with her and talked about ways that we could improve our communication. After having that calm, productive conversation, our relationship as co-workers improved greatly, and we actually became collaborators on a number of successful projects. Anger to me means loss of control. I dont lose control. When I get stressed, I step back, take a deep breath, thoughtfully think through the situation and then begin to formulate a plan of action. For instance, when I am given multiple projects to complete in a short amount of time, I come up with a strategy for how to complete the work in a steady, methodical manner that will not overwhelm me.When I was working on a major project with a team, I got frustrated when one team member failed to deliver an asset on schedule, after promising it would be ready. I took a moment to walk around the block, then invited the team member out for coffee to talk about what happened and how I could help. My approach focused on how can we fix this in the future rather than on the many ways the co-worker messed up. I was glad I took the time to chill out since it turned out my co-worker was dealing with serious personal health issues and unforgiving deadlines from several other projects.

Dont Allow Unhappiness to Hijack Your Career Path

Dont Allow Unhappiness to Hijack Your Career Path Many people are unhappy with their jobsperhaps theirsalary does not meet expectations, or they have not advancedas quickly as they would have liked, or they have wanted to leave but job prospects elsewhere have been slim. Faced with such situations, theymay decide that the only solution is to start from scratch in an entirely new career. However, a mid-career switch can be very risky, especially in a down economy. That brand new life could end up being a costly mistake. Not only could sucha move potentially require additional schooling and training, but it also returnsthe individual totheground floor, in terms of their role in the company. New-career job seekers quickly find that age and life experience will do little to get them beyond the entry level. On average, individuals who change careers can lose 20-50 percent of their former income on the n ew job. It can take an average of 5-10 years to get back to the former salary level after changing careers. The more years the individual has invested in a career, the longer it takes to equal the former salary in their new career. Career jumpersmay face significant lifestyle changes whenaccepting a salary reduction, and they are at an immediate disadvantage when it comes to competing for jobs.Employers cannot afford or are otherwise loathe to spend time and money on extensive training. When someone is hired to fill a lage, they areexpected to immediately begin contributing. Put briefly job experience is valued more than age and life experience.Even if the hypothetical career malcontent is able to move to another field, theycan expect to be outclassed by more experienced competition. Also, lower salary and on-the-job status arelikely to be a source of discontent over the long run, which could adversely affect job performance. This is why those who wish to make mid-career switches s hould consider changing industries, not functions. The source of a persons perceived career unhappiness is often not the career itself. It may be a bad boss, or the industry may be in a slump. It may also be that theposition is not challenging enough or lacks direction. Most career problems can usually be solved by moving to a new company and/or new industry. Most people need to find a new environment and start somewhere with a clean slate. In most areas, it is viable for people to transfer their functional skills to another industry and be accepted by that industry at competitive salary rates. From the employers standpoint, industry hoppersbring fresh perspectives to the more staid industry traditions. They may see situations differently and suggest new solutions.

Checklist Changing Industries and Changing Careers

Checklist Changing Industries and Changing CareersChecklist Changing Industries and Changing CareersChecklist of tactical steps to maximize the chances that you will be able to find a new job in a new industry.Parse your resume.Make sure your skills are transferable to the new industry.Compare.Compare your accomplishments and skills to someone in a similar job who has been working in the industry youre targeting. That will give you a better read on your chances and help you figure out how to position yourself against incumbents, said Robert Hawthorne, president of search firm Hawthorne Research.Look at other peoples resumes and see how they describe their experience, said Isabel Walcott, a marketing consultant who specializes in Internet strategies. Sometimes the job is exactly the same, but they call it something different it might be a content management system in one industry and publishing software somewhere else. Find people who are in the kind of job you want and link up with t hem on social networking sites like LinkedIn or Facebook and ask for their advice.Be convincing, even if no one wants to listen.Get ahead of recruiters and hiring managers who only want to consider candidates with industry experience. Make it clear that your experience outweighs your lack of tenure in a specific field, said Michael Neece, chief strategy officer of PongoResume, an automated resume-writing service. Spell out for them how your experience translates to common themes in the new industry, and explain it in terms of the results you were able to deliver in your previous field.Learn the lingo. Minimize the impression that youre a fish out of water by reading industry blogs and using the same terms or jargon as others in the new industry, Palmer said. It may be shallow, but it will give the hiring managers or recruiters enough confidence to keep talking to you to find out how much you really know, rather than dismissing you at the outset.Be willing to take a step back.Your ca reer may have been stellar, but even your most transferrable skills might not be as useful in a new industry as in the old, said Clark Chrinstensen, a career-long industry switcher who is currently chief financial officer of Atlanta-based PS Energy Group. Dont give away all your seniority just to get a foot in the door, but dont insist on a promotion and a pay raise, either, he said.Network online and in person.Connect with other people and use what you learn from people inside your target industry to shape your own presentation, Internet strategist Walcott advised.

How to deal with that person at work who is driving you crazy

How to deal with that rolle at work who is driving you crazyHow to deal with that person at work who is driving you crazyGretchen Rubinis the 1 bestselling author ofThe Happiness ProjectandThe Four Tendencies, and is also the co-host of the award-winning podcast Happier with Gretchen Rubin. She recently joinedBob Glazer, host of theOutperform podcast, for a conversation about how to find fulfillment in our relationships and at the workplace- even ifsomeone has been driving you a little crazy.BobWhat is the deficit that leads to being unhappy, or not as happy as someone can be?GretchenIf I had to say what the secret to happiness or the principle cause for unhappiness is, I think the answer is relationships. Ancient philosophers and contemporary scientists would agree on this- to be happy, people need strong relationships. We need to feel like we belong. We need to be able to confide. We need to feel like we can get support, and give support. When you look at the people who are happier , they tend to have more deep relationships. What distinguishes people who are happy and less happy at work? Well, do you have a friend at work? Not just a pal that you can talk about pop culture and sports with, but someone who you feel has your back? If you feel like your manager, the person you report to, cares about you and wants to help you succeed according to your own aims, that makes people happier.Any time were trying to figure out what to do with our time, energy, or money, the things that deepen or broaden our relationships are going to make us happier.BobWhen people are struggling with certain relationships in their life, Ive always felt there were two choices You can either change your relationship with that person, or you can change your reaction to it. I think people struggle with the latter like, I know my friends going to come over and say this. I just cant ignore it, and I get myself all worked up.I was speaking to someone this morning, and they were saying that the y get these small customer service complaints, and they keep them up at night. They know it shouldnt, but it affects their overall happiness. If your reaction to something is causing a disproportionate amount of unhappiness, how do you tune that stuff out?GretchenI dont think the answer is always to get rid of the emotion, becausenegative emotion is an important signal. Sometimes feelings of anger, resentment, and fear are legitimate. Maybe theres a reason that you feel angry, and maybe you want to act on that. Maybe you want to solve the problem. Maybe youre like, Every day my boss makes me feel bad. You could say to yourself, I need to make peace with it- that is one thing to do. Another is to be like, You know what? Im going to get another job. Now, sometimes youre like, You know what? My boss really bugs me, but his heart is in the right place. This is the job I want, so I just need to deal with this in a way that it doesnt drive me crazy. One of the things you can do is to think about gratitude.Gratitude is an emotion that drives out negative feelings like resentment and boredom.Think to yourself, The guys annoying, but he really cares about me. Hes come through for me many times. He believes in me. Cant I just laugh it off when he does this thing that bothers me? Im so grateful to have this opportunity.Another thing is that everything that annoys us about other people can teach us something about ourselves. I really like a schedule- I like to know whats coming up, and have an idea in my head of everything thats going to happen at what time. Im not very flexible about changing at the last minute, so if I had a boss who was always changing the plans, that would really annoy me. But my dedication to a strict schedule would really annoy the boss. So maybe its a situation where its not that one person is right and one persons wrong- theres just a conflict in approach. The question is, how can we create a situation where both people get what they want, instead of bugging each other?Like another thing- Im kind of working all the time. Thats the way I like to do things. I was collaborating with somebody who didnt like to work on the weekends, but I didnt know that. So I was sending work emails all through the weekend, and my view was, Well, you can answer them over the weekend, or you can wait till Monday. I dont care, just do your work in your way.But then I found out this person was really resenting it. So I thought, Okay, I could change, or she could change, or we could come up with a solution so that neither one of us has to change, and we both get to work the way we want. So I learned how to use Delay Delivery in Outlook, and now every Monday morning at 800 AM, she gets five emails from me. That works for her, it works for me, problem solved.Sometimes just by acknowledging, Its not that Im right and youre wrong, or that theres something wrong with you or me- how do we come to a place that works for both of us?Ancient philosophers and c ontemporary scientists would agree on this- to be happy, people need strong relationships.BobIt all comes down to communication.GretchenYes, communication is really the hard thing. I only found out by chance that I was annoying this person- she did not tell me directly. I wish she had just told me, because I wouldnt have been mad. Communication is key, and people often shy away from that. Maybe the more profound thing is that if theres a problem, try to communicate with the person. Is there a solution that we can figure out for this rather than walking around in a simmering state of resentment, anger, boredom, or fear?BobThats a good segue into the work environment. We have tended to associate happiness with engagement, which is why were always measuring it and asking people why theyre happy. We think that if theyre not happy, theyre not engaged, and theyre not doing a great job. What does your research tell you about happiness in the work environment?GretchenNobody wants work that f eels arbitrary or pointless.Without the feeling of growth, people start to feel paralyzed or stagnant, or like their life is going nowhere. People need a sense of purposefulness- that what theyre doing is contributing. The larger idea is growth, and that people are happier when they live in an atmosphere of growth. Are you learning? Are you making something better? Are you adding to the world? For some people, its very important to have a mission, like, Im bringing water to the desert. Then for some people, its like, I just want to do a great job for my team, and deliver this product to a customer whos going to feel like they got what they wanted. The problem with the atmosphere of growth is that its kind of scary at the beginning. You can feel insecure, you can feel resentful, you can feel dumb. Youre like, Okay, Ill give a presentation, and maybe thats really intimidating. Then you do it a couple more times, and then you feel better about it. Youre like, Wow, Ive got a new skill I can stand up in front of a group of 500 people and give a big presentation. Thats growth. And feeling in control- a major happiness stumbling block is when people feel like they dont have control of their time. Are you working in your own way? Are you allowed to make choices? Are you allowed to do things in your own way, or is somebody constantly telling you what to do? Thats not a good feeling. People want to feel that sense of control.BobSometimes growth for growths sake isnt available, but you talked about speaking, ordoing things outside of your comfortable zone.Is increasing your abilities correlated with becoming happier with what youre doing?GretchenWell I dont think it would be just growth for growths sake, because people might get annoyed by that. Like, Why am I supposed to be doing these online modules to teach me something that I dont need to know how to do? Nobody wants to do something that seems totally random- that just feels like being controlled. It needs to feel like purposeful growth, that theres a reason that Im learning this, that Im going to put it to use, that theres some point to it. Saying to people, Were going to go around the room, and everybodys going to public speak so that everybody gets better public speaking- I dont know that that would be helpful in all circumstances. Somebody might be like, Thats just not my skillset. Im not interested in that. You might as well teach me to juggle.BobOne thing we tested this year was getting everyone to focus on their personal goals and share thoseGretchenWhats interesting about sharing goals is that for some people, if they share a goal, its very powerful for them, and that really helps them meet a goal and take a goal seriously and feel like its an act in the world. But theres a certain number of people for whom if they tell people their goals and their aims, they kind of lose their magic. They do better when they keep it private. If they are in a situation where they have to share it, or they do share it for whatever reason, then they often kind of drift away from it. Its not universally helpful for people to disclose. This conversation has been edited and condensed. To listen to the full version, click here.Thisarticlewas originally published on Heleo.

3 financial tips to help you make a career jump

3 financial tips to help you make a career jump 3 financial tips to help you make a career jump It’s one thing to decide to make a career jump. It’s another to have the means to fund that jump. Finances are one of the most important factors to consider before planning a career change. On my podcast When To Jump, I’ve talked with many entrepreneurs about how they financially managed to take the leap. Here are three of the greatest lessons I’ve learned.1. Utilize the resources available to youHere’s a secret: other entrepreneurs want you to succeed! When they started the website creation tool Weebly, David Rusenko and Chris Fanini wanted to help others grow their own successful business by making it easy to create a website without previous coding and web design skills. In fact, the project was inspired by a friend of the founders who was attempting to create a website and struggling.“When we got started, it wasn’t uncommon that you’d pay $5,000 to $10,000 to build a real website,” Rusenko mentions on the show. “There’s got to be a better way to use technolog y to make this easier and lower the bar for everyone.”Setting out to help others make their dreams a reality, Rusenko and Fanini were driven to create a resource that would let others make the first leap (without burning a hole in their wallets).2. Crowdsource and use your networkBefore jumping into apparel, Kirrin Finch co-founders Laura and Kelly Moffat worked in marketing and teaching, respectively. So when they got into the fashion game, they needed to do a lot of market research for little cost. They began with “guerilla interviews” in public places to gather information.“Try to think of creative ways to find out information that don’t cost thousands of dollars,” says Laura, adding that this could help a new small business decide a direction without spending a ton of money.Furthermore, they emphasize how great crowdfunding resources, like Kickstarter or GoFundMe, can be. On When To Jump, they discuss how these platforms are a great way to first test the market when launching a business by letting you assess the demand for your product, market to your audience, and fund your first production run.3. Appreciate learning experiences as something of valueEssence editor-in-chief Vanessa DeLuca left her job in retail to embark on the not-so-glamorous path to a magazine career. When her retail company relocated, she took it as an opportunity to think about what else she could- and really wanted- to do.“I took a huge pay cut to start a job as an editorial assistant,” says DeLuca on When To Jump. “I used it as an opportunity to learn and get as much experience as I could.”DeLuca moved home and went from working as a buyer in retail to making copies and going on coffee runs, but says she wouldn’t trade the experience for anything: “The coffee and the petty cash and all that doesn’t matter - what matters is I’m getting exposed to all these brilliant editors.”Sometimes, taking a step down the rungs (even if it means taking a pay cut or h aving to move back home), can be the best choice for climbing the ladder.Looking for more tips about changing your career? Check out the When To Jump podcast on  Apple Podcasts  or wherever you enjoy podcasts. Hosted by Mike Lewis, who left his comfortable job in finance to become a professional squash player, the podcast features advice from inspiring entrepreneurs and side hustlers who made the leap.

The Networking Email That Actually Works

The Networking Email That Actually Works The Networking Email That Actually Works Networking is the #1 way to land your next position. Point blank fact. I know you don’t like it. I know you think it’s hard. But do what’s hard, so your job search can be quick. 1 thing I have come to hate over my 19 years of supporting candidates, is when bad networking happens to good people. Yes, I’m talking to YOU! Here’s an example of the bad networking This is usually what's inflicted on an otherwise innocent party: “It was really good to meet you (or connect with you online) earlier! I’m reaching out to my network because I’m strongly interested in finding my next role. I’m in operations. In case you know anybody I can contact, please let me know.” Several things occur to me about this scenario: 1) Nowhere in there do I see that you (bad networker) care a lick about me (innocent bystander.) 2) It’s nice that you’re in operations. But what does that MEAN? If I need to think about it, then, news flash: I’m not going to. 3) Who do you mean, “anybody?” I know a LOT of anybodies. Shall I go through my Rolodex and figure this out? No. #justno The curse of the bad network is that you’re asking vague questions. Therefore, you’re going to get vague (or worse yet: no) responses. By the way, this is analogous to writing your resume using vague language. You know, to present that “consulting” gig you’ve been on for the last 6 months. It goes a little something like this: “Currently offering technology advisory and consulting services to a broad base of clients across several market verticals. Manage projects, administer budgets, and deliver innovative solutions.” That’s nice, except: what projects? For whom? When? And what, exactly, was innovative? That’s a resume that won’t get a response, I guarantee you. Back to networking: if you want your networking to be less hard, and if you want it to actually be a successful vehicle that drives you through your job search and into your ideal role â€" sooner rather than later â€" then get specific about what you’re asking for. (I also am aware you’re allergic to “specificity.” If you don’t “leave your options open” then you might miss out on something.) Ok, but I need you to stop thinking that. Get specific. Here’s how to do it right: “Jim! I hope you are having a great day! I am reaching out to my network because after 15 years as an Operations Manager at the factory level, I've decided to leverage my expertise into a Multi-Site Operations Director on a regional or national scale. I'd like to seek your help. Here are a few job titles I'm seeing that mostly describe what I'm looking for: Director of Operations Operations Control Manager Planning, Operations & Facilities Lead And some of the organizations that look interesting to me are: First Vehicle Services Modis Siemens Do you have a lead in any of those organizations at their Philadelphia, Trenton, or Wilmington locations? I'd appreciate it if you could share those or make an introduction. Thank you for giving this some thought for me. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me should I be able to help you also.” Now, THAT’S a networking email that’s confident (not begging), drills down into what exactly it is that you do, ask for specific people at specific organizations, and shows that you care about the other person. Now. Let's kick things up a notch. You’ve just learned how to talk to networking contacts. Let’s step it up so that you have the exact strategy to immediately talk to the recruiters and decision makers, in a way that immediately communicates your value AND prompts them to pick up the phone to call you. I’m going over what to do in my full online program, “5 Secret Job Search Hacks For The Age 50+ Job Hunter!” Register today so you get in on this limited-seating presentation.

ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS: In order to lower attrition rates and provide better quality applicants for Officer Candidate School and follow on training pipelines, CNRC is working closely with aviation community representatives in all areas. One particular area of concern is the anthropometrics measurements of pilots and naval flight officers. A strict process is used in Pensacola to measure applicants in order to determine which air frames they may qualify to fly. These measurements are based on several factors including height, weight, functional reach, buttocks knee length, and sitting height which is used to ensure the aviators safety on sitting in the cockpit as well as emergency ejections. These measurements include everything we have measured previously with the exception of buttock leg length. After studying the data the aviation community has come up with more accurate guidelines to apply for measurement ranges. The following are the accepted guidelines that should ensure compatibility with all pipelines. For applicants who may be close to limits, I have access to the anthropometrics  website to enter data directly to check measurements. For qualified applicants who are possible selects who are close to limits, ?we may also explore the option of sending them to Pensacola to check their measurements first hand. FOR MALE SNA: 1. Thumb-tip Reach FR: 29.5 inches or greater2. Buttock Knee Length: greater than 22 inches, but less than 26.5 inches3. Sitting Height: greater than 34 inches, but less than 38.8 inches FOR FEMALE SNA: 1. Thumb-tip Reach FR: 29.5 inches or greater2. Buttock Knee Length: greater than 22 inches, but less than 26.5 inches3. Sitting Height: greater than 33.5 inches, but less than 38.8 inches FOR SNFO (MALE OR FEMALE): 1. Thumb-tip Reach FR: 27.5 inches or greater2. Buttock Knee Length: 20.5 inches or greater3. Sitting Height: 32 inches or greater The following guidelines give directions as far as height concerns. Generally an applicant between 66 and 74 will be compatible for all pipelines. FOR SNA: 1. IF 64 INCHES OR GREATER, BUT LESS THAN 76 INCHES: - MOST LIKELY ANTHROPOMETRICALLY COMPATIBLE WITH AT LEAST TWO PIPELINES (SOMETIMES THREE) 2. IF GREATER THAN 76 INCHES, BUT LESS THAN 78 INCHES: - MOST LIKELY ANTHROPOMETRICALLY COMPATIBLE WITH ONLY ONE PIPELINE (NORMALLY PROPS), BUT POSSIBLY TWO PIPELINES (DEPENDS ON SITTING HT). 3. IF LESS THAN 64 INCHES: · SAFE ANTHROPOMETRICS COMPATIBILITY WITH ANY PIPELINE IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY! · INDIVIDUAL IN QUESTION SHOULD BE SENT TO NOMI FOR OFFICIAL ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION BY NASC FLIGHT PHYSIOLOGIST FOR SNFO: 1. IF BETWEEN 64 INCHES AND 78 INCHES: - MOST LIKELY ANTHROPOMETRICALLY COMPATIBLE WITH TWO PIPELINES (PROP JET), BUT POSSIBLE AIRCRAFT RESTRICTIONS SUCH AS THE EA-6B FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH SITTING HEIGHTS GREATER THAN 37.4 INCHES. 2. IF BETWEEN 60 INCHES AND 64 INCHES: MOST LIKELY ANTHROPOMETRICALLY COMPATIBLE WITH TWO PIPELINES (PROP JET), BUT POSSIBLE AIRCRAFT RESTRICTIONS SUCH AS THE T-2, F/A-18, AND EA-6B FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH FUNCTIONAL REACHES LESS THAN 27.5 INCHES (T-REX ARMS). Finally, weight limits prohibit any training for applicants over 235 lbs. This is due to the safety concerns of ejection seats. No candidate will be allowed to enter training who is over 235 lbs. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Community Overview.  Navy pilots  are members of the select, highly skilled  Naval Aviation team.  The Navy maintains and operates more than 4,000  aircraft  including carrier-based jets, land-based patrol and reconnaissance aircraft , transport planes and sea and land-based helicopters. The Navy offers the worlds most advanced and extensive training for candidates who qualify as skilled aviation professionals in a high-quality organization.  Civilians transition  to  aviation officers  during 13 weeks of intensive academic and military training at  Officer Candidate School  (OCS),  Naval Air Station  (NAS) Pensacola, Fla. NAS Pensacola is famed as the birthplace of Naval Aviation. Established in 1914, it is often called the Annapolis of the Air. Aviation training is conducted at the Naval Aviation Schools Command(NASC) at Pensacola. OCS is challenging, requiring hard work and long days to build confidence and pride. Upon successful completion of preliminary training at OCS, future Navy pilots, NFOs and AMDOs are commissioned as Ensigns. All Ensigns entering aviation programs will then complete a six-week air indoctrination course at NASC, Pensacola. Active duty obligation. Candidates will serve a minimum of eight years on active duty from the date of designation as a Naval Aviator. Candidates who do not complete the Navy pilot program will serve four years from the date they are disenrolled from flight status unless released by the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Manpower, Personnel, and Training). Training Pipeline following commission. As a student pilot, youll learn basic airmanship skills, instrument and formation flying, and basic acrobatic maneuvers. Youll also master the art of solo flight, earning the qualification to move on to more demanding training in a specific type of aircraft. Your intermediate and advanced pilot training will occur in one of five naval air communities. These five pipelines are jet (strike), turboprop (patrol and reconnaissance), multi-engine jet (strategic communications), carrier turboprop (airborne early warning) and helicopter (rotary). The pipeline you are in will determine the specialty flying skills you are taught, such as basic air combat tactics, gunnery, low-level flight and carrier landings. Youll also learn land and water survival techniques - key aspects of the Naval Aviation challenge. Youll earn your much-coveted Wings of Gold when you successfully complete your advanced training. With your Wings, youll join the ranks of the most respected aviators in the world-Navy pilots. Before being assigned to your first operational squadron, youll join a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) for training in the specific type of aircraft youll fly in the fleet. Carrier Landings. One of your greatest challenges will come with your first carrier landing. Youll bank your plane into a sharp left turn, lining up with the carrier deck while you drop just the right amount of speed and altitude. Its hook down, wheels down as you approach the carrier flight deck at well over 120 miles per hour. As your wheels touch down, youll throttle forward to full power; your tailhook grabs the arresting cable, slamming you to a complete stop. Theres no feeling in the world to match your carrier landing - until you taxi your plane to the catapult for your first carrier launch. Helicopter Flight. As a  helicopter pilot, youll fly a variety of demanding missions from the decks of several different types of  Navy ships. Your mission could be  anti-submarine warfare  or tracking potential enemy ships. Or you could be searching for  underwater mines  or flying vertical replenishment missions, transferring supplies from one moving ship at sea to another underway. And always present, is the instant, emergency requirement for search and rescue including flying over hostile territory performing Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR). Multi-engine Turboprops/Jet. As a multi-engine turboprop/jet pilot, youll fly a variety of missions, from strategic communications to tracking and surveillance of submarines to  collecting intelligence. Piloting a multiengine E-2 Hawkeye early warning aircraft could find you flying radar surveillance warfare missions from a carrier at sea or from a shore air station. Whatever plane you fly and whatever your mission, as a Navy pilot, you are an integral part of a highly skilled, results-oriented professional team. Locations of initial fleet assignments. Before being assigned to your first operational squadron, youll join a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) for training in the specific type of aircraft youll fly in the fleet. As a Pilot, you may be detailed to various locations on the Pacific Fleet, Atlantic Fleet and overseas. Special pay/bonuses. Naval aviation officers receive  aviation career incentive pay  in addition to their regular salary. Student aviation officers receive $125 per month flight pay during flight training. The monthly amount of  flight pay  received depends on time in service and increases by hundreds of dollars within a few years to the current maximum of $840.00 per month. In addition, you may be eligible for a  retention bonus  at the end of your initial commitment, currently worth up to $245,000 over a 25-year career. Basic eligibility requirements. Applicants must be citizens of the United States. Applicants must be at least 19 years old and of such age that they will not have passed their 27th birthday on commissioning. Maximum age limit may be adjusted upward to their 31st birthday on a month for month basis for active duty and prior military service applicants. Applicant must have a Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited College or University; have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Major: No restrictions, but degrees in technical disciplines preferred. Mental: AQR 3/ PFAR 4/ PBI 4. The Commander,  Navy Recruiting Command  (CNRC) will endeavor to select candidates with the highest mental qualifications, accepting minimum scores only when market conditions or exceptional cases warrant. Physical: Must be physically qualified and aeronautically adapted in accordance with the physical standards established by the Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (CHBUMED). Applicants must have 20/40 or better, uncorrected vision correctable to 20/20, normal color and depth perception.  Active duty  military members  accepted as candidates must obtain an aviation physical exam from a qualified Flight Surgeon to determine aeronautical adaptability.

But Glassdoor also reported that while 48% say salary and compensation hold the most weight when it comes to choosing a job, less than one in 10 job postings online feature information about salary. Here’s how employers can improve workers’ experiences on the job.Tips for getting employees to stayHere’s what employers can do.Be transparent from the beginningGlassdoor  found that 98% of people working and looking for jo bs reported that “it would be helpful” having salary ranges included in open job listings.Carmel Galvin, Chief Human Resources Officer at Glassdoor, commented on the research in a statement: “Pay can be a big motivator for employees to take a job, however, very few job listings actually include pay information, even if this is overwhelmingly what job seekers want. If candidates were better informed about how their pay and career could progress during the initial job search and recruiting process, they would be less likely to take a job that turns out to be a bad fit.”Give employees the tools they need to excelThis could just make things easier for both parties.A blog post by specialized staffing firm Robert Half explains why “training and development” is an important for keeping employees around.“In any position and industry, professionals want the possibility for advancement. Smart managers invest in their workers’ professional development and seek opportunities for them to grow. Some companies pay for employees to attend conferences or industry events each year, or provide tuition reimbursement or continuing education training,” it says.Talk to veteran talentEmployees want support that also improves their lives outside of work.An online “‘how-to’ guide”  on workers’ retention from The Wall Street Journal says that employers should “conduct ‘stay’ interviews.”“In addition to performing exit interviews to learn why employees are leaving, consider asking longer-tenured employees why they stay. Ask questions such as: Why did you come to work here? Why have you stayed? What would make you leave? And what are your nonnegotiable issues? What about your managers? What would you change or improve? Then use that information to strengthen your employee-retention strategies,” it says.

5 questions to ask yourself for pursuing the life you truly want

5 questions to ask yourself for pursuing the life you truly want 5 questions to ask yourself for pursuing the life you truly want There’s nothing worse than doing something wrong, not enjoying yourself while doing it, but hanging on because you think it’s “the right thing to do.” This one sentence, at times, came to define a lot of my professional life. Maybe you’re going through the same thing now, or perhaps you’ve survived the storm. Know this - suffering through this without mustering up the courage to change can cause damaging ripple effects throughout your life.I start here too with some personal context that comes to define the lives of so many of us - for far too long. The truth is, all of us are going to struggle. All of us will suffer. It’s unavoidable. It’s not about preventing these things from happening, but rather having a game plan for how to manage, adjust and break through to creating a bolder, better picture for ourselves.Never thought I’d share that one of the most powerful speeches I’ve seen on life, purpose and direction is actually from funny man, Jim Carrey. Do yours elf a favor and watch his commencement speech at Maharishi University, shared here:There’s a lot of great truths in there. I continue to come back to this one:“You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”Meditate and think deeply on those powerful words. Surely, you’re not someone who has found wild success at everything you’ve tried. But even before that thought, I doubt you’ve ever loved everything you’ve done. In fact, maybe there are things you’ve actively chosen to do that you knew you didn’t love, yet that mental alarm inside of saying, “Nooooo!” still didn’t prevent you from entering into a situation that didn’t turn out for the best. Now, I’m a big believer that difficult and challenging times define us. Adversity sharpens and strengthens us. But there’s also unnecessary struggles and situations we can avoid if we simply begin with pursuing a path, job, venture or career that we actually love. It can start with a thought, the knowledge that we enjoy or love an activity, or simply observing that we see someone else doing something that we love and thinking - “I want to be a part of that!”I go back to his powerful words above. You can FAIL at doing something you don’t like, just because you’re too afraid to set your sights and do something you truly love. The example Carrey gives in his speech comes from the real-life story of his father! His father was fired from a “safe” accounting job, which he actually hated, but thought was the sure thing. The safe path. Turns out, he was wrong. And fortunately, his son decided to learn from this poignant life moment, and follow his true dream. It’s worked out to be a remarkable, successful career. No one ever could have predicted the acclaim and success that Carrey has enjoyed, but what’s easier to predict is the assumption that he would have found success doing something that he truly loves and is passionate about. W hether it had only been just a side-gig or hobby, or of course a true profession as an actor and comedian.“I can tell you from experience, the effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is.”1. What am I doing in my life right now that is allowing me to have a positive, transformative effect on others?I bet there are more people than you think - who are in your life right now - whose lives you can influence and perhaps change forever. You may not think they’re open to it. But maybe the truth is, you’re not yet open to it. Walk through the door and begin by asking yourself what you can do to change your professional and personal environments for the better. How can you be more positive and more adventurous in challenging yourself to do more for others, while simultaneously improving your own circumstances? The more you think about this and use it to guide you, the more likely you will feel compelled to take action and do things for the benefit of others. Th e results will add amazing richness and value to your life.“You can spend your whole life imagining ghosts and worrying about the pathway to the future but all there will ever be is what’s happening here and the decisions we make in this moment.”2. What are the top three things you are ignoring in your life right now, that you truly LOVE to do most?I wonder if you find there’s something you’re ignoring, suppressing or resisting that is so powerful, so moving that you cannot afford to put off any longer? This one struck the greatest chord with me. Maybe you know the feeling. As Carrey found with his father, then learned from, he didn’t want his fate sealed by doing something that he truly didn’t love. The results can be equally as bad as attempting something big and bold, that we may perceive as more of a “long shot.”Don’t get caught up in settling for second-best. Trying to go the risk-free route in the hope that this will yield a higher “life return” is a ba d move. You immediately set the ceiling very low. You stop imagining and dreaming, and begin to settle. Settling for less is a huge mistake. Doing what you love and working your heart out for it is always a great move.3. What short term “losses” are you willing to accept to reap amazing, future gains? The best lesson you can learn from this speech - and one of life’s most powerful gifts of wisdom - is that following your heart, crushing fear and having an intelligent plan to lead you is the best path forward. This means that you take on greater risk. Increase your risk threshold. And don’t be afraid to do so.This never, ever seems easy. And some people will outright ignore this path because of situations and circumstances for where they are in life. Trust me, I know. As the father to two young children, the idea of dropping everything and going to pursue some dreams simply isn’t practical. It would be foolish and shortsighted. The key word being, “some.”But as I’ve learned, to get to where I’ve truly wanted to be, I absolutely had to take some chances that friends, colleagues and even some family scoffed at. I didn’t care. Because I trusted my intuition and the deep, intelligent thought I gave my situation. The longer you “kick the can” down the road, the longer you ignore the wishes and dreams of your heart; the longer you live someone else’s life, which is NEVER a smart decision. Because once you begin to do this, the more warped your mental and emotional reality truly becomes. You experience greater frustration and anxiety, and frankly, the results aren’t pretty, either. When you go for your biggest dream(s), you likely won’t experience immediate success. You will fail. Make mistakes. Get wounded. You’ll begin to question yourself. But when you have a firm purpose of amendment, when you’re operating off strong values and powerful faith in yourself, you are built to last. You can survive the short-term losses because you know in your heart that they always lead to long-term wins.It gets so much harder to succeed when your mind and heart aren’t aligned with your purpose and mission. The wins will come. They may not always come when you think they should or could, but don’t let that frustrate you. Keep going.“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” -  T.S. Eliot4. What is your risk threshold and how can you avoid playing things conservatively?Playing things conservatively isn’t always a bad idea. It’s not necessarily bad advice for a moment, a season or perhaps even with your finances, at times. But an overall risk-averse approach to all areas of your life leads to boredom, disappointment and an increase of fear. Simply put - it leads to eventual failure. The reason that it’s hard to detect is because the conservative approach doesn’t reveal itself to be failure immediately. It’s a drawn out, elongated process that pulls you away from what you d esire most. It disguises itself as the “right” approach, but in reality it’s ripping your inspiration right out of you.Ironically enough, your attempt to mitigate fear through a conservative approach only ends up maintaining or building your fear to a greater level.By not pursuing your dreams - by ignoring and denying yourself from becoming who you truly are, you suffocate and stifle the powerful voice inside of you that yearns to be heard both for yourself and the world. You may think staying in that relationship that you know isn’t meant to be is the right thing. Because leaving will cause pain. The short-term blow will feel devastating. But what about the long-term? What about slowly hurting, rotting away inside and feeling a longing for something greater? What about the thought that staying still can truly eliminate your future happiness? The same can be said for our jobs. In case you haven’t noticed - regardless of your current age - the world has changed dramaticall y in the past 20 years. We’re still within a 20-year window of the emergence of the Internet as a total gamechanger for both personal and professional business pursuits and happiness. You can instantly start your own business. You can learn from others on how to do so successfully. You can find a life partner, friend, new hobby or observe precisely how to study a subject, play an instrument and even to learn how to speak another language.Living with fear destroys the moment. And as Jim says above, it’s the moment that matters. The past is gone, and while memories remain, it’s what we do now that matters more than anything else. By living in the present moment, if you do it the right way with intelligent planning and a firm purpose, you continue to sow seeds for your future. Future moments. It’s always the moment that defines us.5. What do I see as my “end game” for what I want most in my life? You can have what you want (within reason). I can tell you from personal and pro fessional experience - and observing the lives of wildly successful people - that your biggest dreams become real when you start to get specific about exactly what it is you want. Do you want to own your own art gallery? Draft the plan FIRST in your mind, then capture it digitally or on paper. Save it.Keep coming back to it over and over again. Refine it. Improve upon it. Keep building and creating the mental architecture in your mind, that will surely need modifications and improvements over time. Tired of Your Job 3 Steps to Pick a New Career

Tired of Your Job 3 Steps to Pick a New Career Tired of Your Job 3 Steps to Pick a New Career 1Even people who love their careers can get a little restless. As a career advisor, I’m always learning about new and interesting career options, and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve thought, “I want to do that!” But what if you’re truly tired of your job, of the career path you’ve been on? It might be time to consider a change- time to pick a new career. Here are three steps to pick a new career: 1) Know that you don’t have to start from scratch. In reading up on this topic, I found this bit of advice in an article about choosing a new career on Forbes from Liz Ryan, founder of The Human Workplace, to be so very true, but not said often enough: “There really is nothing completely different from what you’ve done before. Unless you’re becoming a lion tamer or getting ready to ship out on a crab-fishing boat, you’re going to find that career paths in the business and professional worlds have much more in common with one another than you might have thought.” People who want to change careers are often stopped in their tracks because they worry that they’ll have to start at the very beginning. So keep that in mind as you move along the path to pick a new career. The vast majority of your skills and experiences will be, in some way, applicable to your search for a new career. 2) Focus on the “why.” Too often, career changers get caught trying to figure out WHAT they want to do. They start with what they’re good at doing- the skills they have. But what you’re GOOD at doing doesn’t necessarily match up with what you LIKE doing. Make a list of all the things you like doing, and then list the reasons WHY you like doing those things. For example… What you like doing: Why you like doing it Having dinner with friends: I enjoy the interaction and getting out and about Running: I don’t like to sit still, and I like to challenge myself physically Knitting: I like working with my hands, coming up with new patterns, and being creative In thinking about WHY our mystery person likes doing these things, it can be gathered that she is a people-person who likes to be on her feet and physically active, and who likes creative pursuits with lots of attention to detail. Which brings us to the next step… 3) Research careers that match your “why.” Think about your current job, and any past jobs you had. Were there certain tasks or skills that you enjoyed above all others, and WHY? Did they fulfill the same things that your favorite hobbies fulfill? Now it’s time to research new jobs and careers that meet your criteria for WHY you enjoy your hobbies, and why you enjoyed your past jobs. To research careers based on skills you have AND enjoy using, there are a number of different assessments online you can try. My Next Move: An assessment created by the American Job Center Network and O*Net, this assessment has 60 questions and presents you with really useful information when you’re done. EducationPlanner.org: A nice, quick assessment geared towards students, but useful for all ages. CareerOnestop Skills Profiler: Also related to the American Job Center Network, this assessment takes about 20 minutes to complete, and provides comprehensive results to help you take action. Once you’ve completed this research, you should have a list of careers to consider and move forward on. To pick a new career, you need to do a lot of groundwork and research. The tips in this article will help you with self-examination, identifying career fields you might be interested in. The next step requires you to learn more about those particular fields and start searching for jobs in those areas. Luckily, you can be confident that the careers you’ve identified are solid choices based on your interests and skills. Readers, are you trying to pick a new career?
